Los Colibris – Restaurant Review 2017

I made reservations at this restaurant for Summerlicious 2017. As a foodie lover/fanatic, of course I wanted to try an upscale Mexican restaurant. Los Colibris is yes upscale and classy in its style. The food on the other hand, in our opinion (my family) really wasn’t what we’d expected.

Ambiance

Upscale, classy, appealing and attractive interiour decor and vibrant atmosphere. Upon entrance you are greeted by a beautiful bar with its yellow backing stools. A circular ย dining area to your left and a corridor-ish style looking dining room. Booths are situated on the right against a wall with candles placed behind you, and tables located on the left side. The half like kitchen with its open concept, is at the back of the restaurant. To the extreme left of the kitchen are where you will find the washrooms.

There are 3 stalls in the women’s washrooms and all needed to be flushed. It was one of those automatic flushers, but apparently didn’t work with the previous occupants because they all needed to be flushed. I tried to flush the less dirty one, but to no avail.

I hailed down the manager, and he quickly asked one of the cleaners to kindly flush the toilets for me. They both entered et voila! They were all flushed simultaneously! Yay

Bathroom hallway

Great and prompt service for that! Thanks!

Staff/Service

As my previous rant about the washrooms, I believe that was such a plus and and the fact that they were apologetic for the mess, which in my books as a reviewer, means alot to me. It radiates showmanship!

We were seated promptly as of course we had reservations. Our server was pleasant, and that’s all I remember about her.

Food arrived in a timely matter.

Food

Guacamole $10

  • pomegranate, house-made chips

Delicious, creamy and thick. We enjoyed this very much.

Camarones a la Diabla $17

  • spicy grilled shrimps in guajillo-arbol adobo, corn puree, avocado

My daughter and I both had this meal, because we love shrimps that much. It came to us lukewarm, like it was sitting on the kitchen counter for awhile. The sauce over the shrimps was already cold. It was disappointing. We notified our server. There were 5 shrimps each in total per plate. I ate one, and my daughter ate one and half. We were already starving. The server said that she would tell the kitchen to make us new ones right away. Well no they didn’t. It came back the same way, just heated up. Nothing was replenished as you would expect an upscale, high end restaurant should do. Totally disappointed! She got back her three comical shrimps and I got back my four. Awesome.

Chiles en Nogada $28

  • pork piccadillo stuffed poblano pepper with raw walnut sauce, poblano rice

My husband had this meal and said it wasn’t good. The sauce was too much on the sweet side. He ate it, because like I said, we were starving.

Arrachera $27

  • flat iron steak (medium rare) marinated inchile ash sauce, cheese chicharron, pico de gallo, refried chipotle bayo beans, chorizo verde, handmade tortillas (tortillas are small and we ordered more of these)

My son really enjoyed this meal. He is a steak lover and his steak was made to his liking. No complaints on this one.

Churro Ice Cream Sandwich ย $11

  • mexican donut with house-made ice cream

This was yummy as hell!

Tres Leches $11

  • moist milk cake, coconut sorbet

We all hated this. It was mushy and the coconut sorbet was really tangy and just really gross. The cake part wasn’t too bad and I’m saying this with a so-so facial expression.

Final Thoughts

This restuarant was beautiful, but the food was lacking. With such high prices you would think that the food was really special. The fact that our grilled shrimp meal came cold and that they didn’t replenish the serving was odd and gravely disappointing. Everthing was high end here, unfortunately the quantity of the food after we complained about it, isn’t high end customer service.

Had high end prices & expectations. Wouldn’t return.

ps. The pix are horrid because there wasn’t enough good lighting. ๐Ÿ™
