Boku Soku – Restaurant Review 2017

Distillery District, Downtown Toronto

42 Gristmill Lane

Paid parking in effect

My son and I went here for the start of Summerlicious in Toronto, July 8th. Summerlicious begins July 7th and runs to July 23rd 2017. It is an awesome event which I so excitedly partake in, as I am a friggin foodie lover! Summerlicious just like Winterlicious offers a prix fixe  three course menu at Toronto’s top restaurants.

Ambiance

Welcoming, comfy, open concept, bright and lively atmosphere. With its high ceiling and exposed duct work, The restaurant has a modern look and feel to it. Tables are to the left with the kitchen/bar to the right. The two bathrooms are located at the back and are quite spacious inside. Its also very clean, which I totally appreciate and love.

Food

Tempura

  • 2 shrimps
  • 2 sweet potatoes
  • 1 red pepper
  • 1 zucchini

This meal as a starter should have been hot to touch, but it wasn’t.  It was ok but I’ve had better.

Sashimi

  • a variety of sashimi and my son enjoyed this

Wakame Udon + Kappa maki

I made a mistake in ordering this, I think I read the menu too fast, as I thought I was ordering fried Udon noodles, but it was soup instead.  No problem I thought as I peered into the bowl of soup. Its Udon noodles and my God, I do love myself a heaping bowl of Udon noodles!

Well it was bland as hell. Plain Jane heaping bowl of nothingness! I was gravely dissapointed but dove in anyways, because I thought perhaps I could find bits of mushrooms or something that would give it taste. Nope. The broth was slightly ok and piping hot, so that’s a good thing! The noodles itself had no taste. I would never order this again.

Spicy Maki Set

  • 6 pieces of spicy tuna sushi
  • 6 pieces of spicy salmon sushi

These were delicious as stated from my son.

Dessert consisted of Sesame & Red Bean Ice Cream, both were delicious!

Staff/Service

Hostess which was also a server was pleasant and seated us promptly.

We were seated by the windows and our server gave us time to look over the menu as he first took our drink order. He returned in a timely fashion and took the rest of our order.

It was going ok until we finished our main courses and at which point he seemed to have forgotten we were there. I tried to make eye contact as he passed our table to no avail. Ten minutes went by and still our untouched empty dirty plates were still in front of us. I then hailed down another server and told her to please call our server as we were ready for dessert. She took our plates finally and then our server came. I notified him that we were ready for dessert and as he was about to leave, I proceeded in telling him to please wipe down our table as it was unclean. I wanted a clean fresh slate in order to enjoy our dessert.

Nothing turns me off than telling staff how to do their job properly. He was slow as molasses, not intuitive at all and didn’t have spunk and liveliness.

Final Thoughts

This was not my 1st visit to Boku Soku, but it will be my last. Food was okay and the service was very very slow. I visitted here for Winterlicious 2016 and thought I’d give it another whirl as our 1st visit was hell amazing. I wanted to rekindle the moment. It didn’t happen for me, but one good thing, I enjoyed my one on one quality time with my son!
